Web 2.0 Mashup just launched – http://www.halloweenmashup.com/ – a good excuse to play around with all of the scary APIs. This new web site is part of the new mix of social networking / Web 2.0 online plays that have been popping up everyday with one scary twist – it tries to focus on something FUN – Halloween parties. We were bored with many of the mashups being launched (how many ways can I see shoe stores on a map).
So what is so cool about HalloweenMashup.com? We couldn’t find any good Halloween parties to go to, so we checked out Upcoming.org (part of Yahoo!) and took their API and threw it on a Google Map. When we started looking at various areas across the U.S. we noticed that many cities did not have any parties listed (which is sad) – so we pulled in additional events and Halloween related stuff from the Yahoo Local API.
But the page still looked boring, so we added in random images from the Flickr API tagged as “Halloween Costume”. Then we realized there really wasn’t any text on the page so we used the Yahoo News API for Halloween related news, which really wasn’t that exciting or scary, but we tried.
So after all of this I realized that you probably don’t live near me – and you don’t care about Halloween parties in New York if you are in San Francisco, so we added something cool, the HostIP API to locate your address and Geocode it! Its not perfect, as it thought my fancy friend who lives in Malibu lived in the ghetto outside LA – but it is a good start and will prevent you from flying across the country to find a Halloween party, even through you may still have to drive to a bad part of town.
There is probably other cool stuff in the Web 2.0 / social networking world tied to Halloween that we could have added to the site – so go to the site and find our Blog and tell us what we missed. And if you enjoyed the mashup – remember to add it to your Digg and del.icio.us accounts!
If you are looking for a Halloween party or if you just wanted to see a mashup about something fun – stop reading an go check out:
